Introduction
Originally built in 1861, the Gothic-type cottage on Burrow Road could not be attributed to a known architect. Following a protracted planning history, the Practice was appointed to secure permission for a substantial extension and the restoration and conversion of the historic cottage into a contemporary coastal home with views over the beach.
Given the building’s unusual construction and inherent fragility, the project required a carefully conceived design approach to protect the existing fabric and avoid dismantling or undermining the structure. The Practice developed a conservation-led strategy that balanced significant new accommodation with the sensitive repair and retention of historic elements, ensuring that the character of the original cottage remained legible within the completed scheme.
Since completion, the house has been added to the Record of Protected Structures, recognising its architectural and cultural interest and confirming the value of the conservation approach undertaken.
